COLUMBUS — TODAY, the Equal Districts Coalition — a group of over 30 Ohio advocacy organizations and labor unions engaged in the redistricting process — released the following statement celebrating the Ohio Supreme Court’s rejection of rigged congressional district maps:
“The importance of this moment cannot be overstated. Here in Ohio and on a national scale, extremists are trying to tamper with the American electoral system to silence voters’ voices. They have chosen to rig the game rather than try to win it with good policy.
“Ohio voters and our state Supreme Court just made their scheme to manipulate the peoples’ will much more difficult.
“Last year, Governor DeWine and Ohio’s Republican supermajority blatantly ignored our state Constitution to draw their party unearned power. Today, a bipartisan coalition of justices shut them down.
“Once again, the Ohio Supreme Court has stood firm with Ohio voters and our state Constitution. They have soundly rejected district maps rigged to give Republicans far more seats in Congress than they earn in votes.
“Ohio voters spoke, and the Supreme Court listened. Let’s get to work to implement the people’s ruling.”
